3 Black Jackets & a Fur Snood

Despite all my past warnings about black, today’s post seems to have a very black theme.  Back in my pre-psoriasis days, I was a big fan of black.  Not in a Goth way.  I just loved black.  I snorted in disagreement when Trinny & Susannah claimed that black did not suit most people.  To me, it was classy and if I’m honest, it was an easy colour to wear.  No thought needed, just stick on all-black and away you go!

I guess I still hanker slightly after those days and clearly this hankering was very much to the fore during my trip to the States.  The first of my jackets is one that I think I will get a lot of wear out of.  However, I’m not happy with how I’ve styled it in this picture.  Ideally I would prefer it with jeans and a white top.  But I don’t seem to possess the correct white top to go with it – darn!  I’ll need to shop.  Before you suggest a tee-shirt, let me explain that my figure is not one which is flattered by a tight-fitting tee-shirt.  They are just way too unforgiving of the mid-section … even in my size 10 days (a moment please, whilst I sigh nostalgically!) I always preferred something looser around the tummy area.

Reduced from $100 to $27, it would frankly have been rude to leave this behind.  I’m not sure if the photo picked it up, but there are also silver threads going through this and it has a silver edging around the border and pockets.  The brand is INC and I bought it in Macys.  God bless Macys … you go to the till with a jacket whose tag says $49 and when it rings up, it’s a mere $27.  Happened twice.  How happy was I?
It may be black but the white threads will camouflage a flaky scalp

This next one, I’m a little unsure about.  The Child was with me and she gleefully fell on it when she spied it on the rack.  Knowing my love of sequins, she was beyond delighted with her find.  Initially I loved it, but now I’m not too sure.  Part of me thinks that it’s fab but there’s a little part of me that wonders if it’s a tad ‘lady in her late sixties attending a Golf Club dinner’?  I would love to hear your thoughts. Also INC and again $100 reduced to $27.  Happy days.

Black & white pics are so much more flattering!

And now comes the moment where I must confess to a Big Mistake.  To be honest, I knew as I bought this that it was a Big Mistake.  It’s a black tuxedo jacket.  It’s beautifully made and between sale prices and a voucher that I had, it cost $50 down from over $200 in a store called White House Black Market.   Perhaps it was foolish, but I’d prefer to think of it as optimistic.  Sometimes my scalp behaves itself and I don’t need to worry about flaking.  I also live in permanent hope that one day I will wake up and the psoriasis will be gone.  Either way, the tux jacket is a classic so it’s something that I will have in my wardrobe for many years.

Lastly having raved about the Paul Costelloe for Dunnes fur snood before Christmas, I don’t think I did it any justice by showing it worn with a puffa jacket in my snow picture of the New Year.  This was not the look I had in mind for it at all.  What I did want, was to pair it with a Zara camel swing coat that I bought two years ago.  I think you’ll have to agree, it looks far better with this.

That’s the haul.  Well, apart from lots of make-up, an eye-lash curler (can’t see that it makes any difference) and what felt like the entire stock of Hollister.  I’d love to hear your comments. Any suggestions on where to find a decent draped white top and even more importantly, your thoughts on the sequin jacket would be very welcome.

Have a great weekend.

    1. Thank you so much. You have no idea how much I loathe having my picture taken ... I think I'll go into hiding for the next few months after this post :) Must confess I love the coat too, was thrilled to bits with it when I bought it two years ago and it's still going strong.

  3. Hi Helen,

I love your purchases and the snood is beautiful.
The P.C. snood that I saw was in a different colour (sort of creamy) but yours is gorgeous - well done to your daughter.

I do like the jackets you bought but think that I would prefer the black and white one without the pearls.
You look lovely and your hair is great looks in fab condition!

    Have a nice weekend.
I hope we don't get the snow promised

Take care and once again your photos are great.

    1. Fiona, you're absolutely right. I need to lose the pearls (I didn't think I'd ever hear myself use those words!) Thank you for your lovely comments .. although I wouldn't mind some snow. I bought gorgeous snowboots 18 months ago and am still waiting to wear them:)

  4. Wow - loving the photos and all your new jackets. I think the sequin one would work if you dressed it down…maybe wore with skinny jeans and some black stiletto courts with a t-shirt underneath and like Fiona says, no pearls. It's a great jacket to have really because you could pop it over a formal dress and then don't forget, when you're 60+, it's one for the golf club dinner dance! lol…you're along way away from that! Loving the snood too…perfect for this cold weather. Avril x

    1. I now see the truth in what you've often said Avirl. It's not until you've posted a pic that you suddenly look at an outfit and think 'no'! My poor pearls ... they're getting some lambasting today, lol!

  5. Hi Helen... love your camel coat and of course the snood is perfect with it! Agree with all as regards the pearls but I love your jackets. Very versatile pieces to have! Enjoy your weekend!

  6. Lovely to see some photos of you Helen, you got some great pieces there, I agree with everyone else you need to loose the pearls and funk up the jacket a bit, boyfriend jeans would be great with it. That Zara coat is gorgeous too.

    1. Thanks so much. Will definitely have to play around a bit with the sequin jacket and who knows? I might even grit my teeth and post some more pics to see what people think. This feedback is really useful!

  7. I'm with everyone else - lose the pearls to make the whole look more youthful. The jacket itself is enough of a statement but would benefit from being worn with jeans rather than anything too formal.

I like your looks in the last two pics best - very chic - it's how I see you.

    1. Bog - pressed the wrong button before I could say - it's lovely to see you in the photos - really brings to life the person behind the writing :o) Don't leave it too long till the next time and more outfit posts from you please!

    2. Thanks Sue. Firstly, as I hate (really, truly loathe!) having my pic taken, it's a serious trial for me to do these posts ... you'll have to give me lessons as you're always great at cropping your pics! And you're right .. in general my look is more chic. Being small, I tend to keep clothes fitted and to be honest, I'm not sure the sequin jacket with boyfriend jeans would really be a look that I could pull off with any degree of success. However, I am definitely going to play around and see what alternatives I can come up with. And clearly, NO pearls !!!

  8. Loving all your purchases. Even if you don't bond with the one The Child picked, you will have fun wearing it, knowing who chose it.

  11. Oh my gosh you look GORGEOUS in all these outfits. What about a draped silvery grey top with that top jacket. Dove grey would look so pretty on you, One of those tops which drapes from both sides would look so elegant and yet modern. You could try it with a really dark straight jean too. I know Eileen Fisher always does those drapey tops but sure there are some more affordable ones around. The tuxedo is so so perfect (you look like a movie star in it lady!) and would look fab with jeans too (with that white T you are going to find). Great haul, and isn't it amazing how when you take a photo of your outfits it becomes much clearer. I love my eyelash curler to the extent that with mascara it's my desert island take.

    1. Thank you so much for your lovely comments. You're so kind .. am feeling all chuffed!!! I went onto the Eileen Fisher site to discover that the Boston store is in Copley, literally around the corner from my sister and I never noticed it. Vety annoying as whilst pricey, the clothes on the website looked fab. And snap! I actually tried on a dove grey silk top on Friday to go with the first jacket. However, after a lot of over-indulging at Xmas, I think I'll need to do a stint of brisk walking and nil-by-mouth before I start buying any tops!!

  12. Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous pictures! I love all three jackets -agree that the second will look entirely different with another look - jeans and some silver jewelry ? But I think it's versatile like that - Kat from Does my Bum Look 40 in this has lots of ideas for jackets. The 3rd pic is a classic - hope you get to wear it - would a silk scarf help on troublesome days? Well done for posting pictures !! xx

    1. Thanks Claire. I'll have to scroll back over some of Kat's older posts. She does do a very good line in styling jackets, although with her height and figure, everything looks good! (still really jealous of your new Ash wedges incidentally)

  14. Loving your work lady! And you laugh when you see two jackets I recently bought on the blog, but I'll say no more! I know what you mean about the sequin one, you need to keep the rest of the outfit "young" i.e. stick it over a black frock and its golf club, but jeans t-shirt and heels and I think you will be fine!

  16. I love all 3 jackets! And most importantly, you carry them off with such aplomb. I love how you keep the top and bottom in one color which elongates the body and let the jackets shine. I can't believe your jacket costs $27. Only in the US!
